Global Dialogues: Digital Fashion Marketing conference introduces speaker Jennifer Richards

Jennifer Richards   Analogue to Digital: The impact of fashion film on the fashion brand There has been a surge in the use of fashion films in recent years within the many facets of the fashion industry. The increase in the use of digital look books and fashion documentaries as well as media sharing platforms, has created new communities and opportunities for both fashion brands and their customers. An example of this change is the digital platform, YouTube. YouTube is a ready-made vehicle for digital content and lends itself to rapid distribution of materials within the virtual environment. This presentation will examine the impact of the fashion film within the realms of digital media. It will discuss the consumer journey, and how the individual chooses to receive and communicate information from fashion film and what the implications are for fashion film across other digital and social platforms from both a consumer and brand perspective. With reference to recent examples, it will also consider the impact that fashion film has on the fashion brand itself, making observations regarding the effects that fashion film has on a fashion brands’ identity and equity. It will also discuss the consequences of the fashion film on a fashion brands’ marketing and promotional strategies. It will argue that the fashion film seeks to create a uniquely individual response within the consumer. Fashion film acts as a means of personalising the viewer’s experience of a chosen fashion brand, and therefore subsequently affects their unique fashion choices and relationships to a particular fashion brand. It will also question how this medium will help to evolve within the fashion industry in both the contemporary climate of fashion and throughout future innovations. Global Dialogues: Digital Fashion Marketing introduces speaker Isabella Hemmersbach, PR and Marketing Director at MUUSE

Isabella Hemmersbach   Isabella Hemmersbach is a digital native and has developed the online strategy for one of the biggest independent fashion design competitions, “MUUSE x VOGUE TALENTS Competition”, in collaboration with Vogue Italia and MUUSE. Throughout her work with digital marketing and integrated social media strategy, Isabella draws on her experience with visual curation as freelance illustrator, as well as her background in social sciences and her master’s degree from Copenhagen Business School. This integration of visual communication, marketing and business strategy has lead to great results at MUUSE. What strategies and approaches helped build the MUUSE Facebook fan base to more than 40.000 likes, and the newsletter database to more than 100.000 subscribers, are some of the aspects Isabella will touch upon in her talk.   LEVERAGING YOUR DIGITAL STRATEGY: A CASE STUDY OF THE MUUSE X VOGUE TALENTS COMPETITION There is a growing focus on the digital space and the need to professionalise and utilize a company’s online presence. Much discussion hitherto has been about co-creation and user engagement. However, in the fashion industry this approach to digital strategy is only relevant to the few. Not many brands can leverage consumers’ content creation for their overall business and specific marketing goals, especially as one moves up the design level ladder. Instead, fashion brands should aim to support their overall business goals with their digital strategy. Just because co-creation in its broadest sense has little relevance, this doesn’t mean that fashion brands should miss out on high end content creation through tightly curated PR stunts. Not to forget, the real magic happens, when the on- and offline experience work seamlessly together creating synergies across the all customer experience touchpoints. Measurable goals adapted to the target audience and embedded in the overall business goals should lead any digital endeavours. Isabella’s talk will feature real life examples of this integrated approach, drawing especially on the “MUUSE x VOGUE TALENTS Competition”, which was one of the biggest independent fashion design competitions running for three years in collaboration with MUUSE and VOGUE Italia. With designers participating and sharing digital content 24/7, a physical exhibition and an online voting phase, this competition had great marketing value, which was successfully realised. Throughout its course, more than 40.000 voters per competition were turned into more than 40.000 Facebook followers and 100.000 newsletter subscribers for MUUSE. Drawing on this case, Isabella Hemmersbach will discuss how to digitally support strategic marketing and PR initiatives to achieve business goals. A fashion designer and maker, Alana teaches widely across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Heriot Watt implementing her knowledge of the socially responsible fashion to the design process. The Digitally Informed Consumer: A study of fashion retailers social marketing practices. The new generation of fashion consumers want to be informed. Generation Z have grown up with recycling being the norm, canvas totes being their handbags and the everyday familiarity with terminology such as global warming and sweatshops. These tribes of fashion consumers are turning to digital and social media in order to become the informed shopper. With this customer demand to access such information, companies are now having to be more open and transparent in their ethical and sustainable practices, with online, digital social marketing being their communication method of choice. This study utilised five high-street fashion retailers as case study examples, where their ethical and sustainable actions and messages were analysed in terms of both communication method and the type of information being disseminated. Further to this, a consumer questionnaire was also developed in order to create a comparison between the information the fashion retailers are offering to inform their customers and what consumers want from their chosen brands and retailers. Early conclusions have shown a disparity in this, with consumers wanting to be engaged with information on a number of different levels in comparison to the retailers who tend to choose one strategy only. Despite this, consumers continue to turn to digital and social media to obtain their information regarding fashion’s ethical and sustainable practices.   X Terrace Fashion Digital Marketing conference Register now button     To know more about X Terrace Global Dialogues: Fashion Digital Marketing conference will be held at Coventry University London Campus E1 7JF on 4th September.  It is a central London one day fashion conference with talks on social media marketing (including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and WeChat…) and fashion social phenomena research by renowned researchers and industry professionals.
